Pore-forming toxins (PFTs) are water-soluble molecules that have been identified as the most crucial virulence factors during bacterial pathogenesis. PFTs disrupt the host cell membrane to internalize or to deliver other bacterial or virulence factors for establishing infections. Disruption of the host cell membrane by PFTs can lead to uncontrollable exchanges between the extracellular and the intracellular matrix, thereby disturbing the cellular homeostasis. Recent studies have provided insights into the molecular mechanism of PFTs during pathogenesis. Evidence also suggests the activation of several signal transduction pathways in the host cell on recognition of PFTs. Additionally, numerous distinctive host defense mechanisms as well as membrane repair mechanisms have been reported; however, studies reveal that PFTs aid in host immune evasion of the bacteria through numerous pathways. PFTs have been primarily associated with foodborne pathogens. Infection and death from diseases by consuming contaminated food are a constant threat to public health worldwide, affecting socioeconomic development. Moreover, the emergence of new foodborne pathogens has led to the rise of bacterial antimicrobial resistance affecting the population. Hence, this review focuses on the role of PFTs secreted by foodborne pathogens. The review highlights the molecular mechanism of foodborne bacterial PFTs, assisting bacterial survival from the host immune responses and understanding the downstream mechanism in the activation of various signaling pathways in the host upon PFT recognition. PFT research is a remarkable and an important field for exploring novel and broad applications of antimicrobial compounds as therapeutics. 相似文献

The phenological characteristics, oil content, and fatty acid composition of 34 selections of Cuphea procumbens have been studied. The mean seed yield per plant was 9.7 ± 0.43 g. Maximum seed yield (16.7 g) was noticed in NBC‐27, while the average number of fruits per plant was 124.9 ± 10.7. The oil content in the seeds ranged from 16.7—28.7%, maximum being in NBC‐34. The fatty acid composition revealed the presence of capric acid (C10:0) in all the selections of C. procumbens as the major constituent of the oil ranging from 87.7—94.6%. C. procumbens showed its novelty as an alternative source of capric acid and may be utilized as a renewable resource in the production of plasticizers and lubricants which wholly depend on petrochemical import. Researches are in progress in order to obtain tolerant cultivars against wild plant characteristics and some delayed seed shattering plants have been identified. 相似文献

Waveguide gas lasers (CO(2) ones especially) continue to be widely used. We have previously studied simple resonator designs with plane mirrors close to each end of the waveguide. Here we examine theoretical predictions concerning hybrid waveguide/free-space resonators with square-bore guides and curved mirrors. We show how resonator mode losses vary as functions of guide length and width, guide-to-mirror distance, mirror radius of curvature, and mirror tilt. We have tested a 7-W cw rf-excited CO(2) laser with unusually good near-TEM(00) transverse-mode quality; it is one of many promising resonator geometries not covered by earlier published research. The common case 3 reflector, sometimes viewed as guaranteeing near-TEM(00) mode performance, is shown to be alarmingly sensitive to small misalignments for certain guide geometries. 相似文献

This article presents a critical discussion of the various physical processes occurring in organic bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells based on recent experimental results. The investigations span from photoexcitation to charge separation, recombination, and sweep‐out to the electrodes. Exciton formation and relaxation in poly[N‐9″‐hepta‐decanyl‐2,7‐carbazole‐alt‐5,5‐(4′,7′‐di‐2‐thienyl‐2′,1′,3′‐benzothiadiazole) (PCDTBT) and poly‐3(hexylthiophene) (P3HT) are discussed based on a fluorescence up‐conversion study. The commonly accepted paradigm describing the conversion of incident photons into charge carriers in the BHJ material is re‐examined in light of these femtosecond time‐resolved measurements. Transient photoconductivity, time‐delayed collection field, and time‐delayed dual pulse experiments carried out on BHJ solar cells demonstrate the competition between carrier sweep‐out by the internal field and the loss of photogenerated carriers by recombination. Finally, an emerging hypothesis is discussed: that bimolecular recombination accounts for the majority of recombination from short circuit to open circuit in optimized solar cells, and that bimolecular recombination is bias‐ and charge‐density‐dependent. The study of recombination loss processes in organic solar cells leads to insights into what must be accomplished to achieve the “ideal” solar cell. 相似文献
